Ontario has taken control of the Thames Valley District School Board over financial mismanagement, Education Minister Paul Calandra said Wednesday. A provincial review revealed the board spent $40,000 on a staff retreat at the luxury Skydome hotel in Toronto, despite running “significant” deficits for years, leading to student service cuts.
Calandra said the review found “a lack of financial oversight in the budgeting process” and criticized the board for prioritizing “a retreat… amid a multi-billion dollar budget deficit.” The province has also launched probes into three other boards and ordered a fifth to repay travel costs.
