General Motors will temporarily shut down its CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll starting next month, with plans to restart at half capacity in the fall. The company says the pause is due to slowed sales and high inventory of BrightDrop electric delivery vehicles built at the plant. Just over 1,900 Zevo models were sold in Canada and the U.S. combined in 2024.
The plant employs around 1,200 workers, and layoffs begin today, with some production running into May before the full shutdown. Ingersoll’s mayor called the news heartbreaking and said the town will work to support affected families. Production is expected to resume in October under a single shift for the foreseeable future, resulting in the indefinite layoff of nearly 500 workers.
