A recent traffic safety initiative by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region has resulted in a significant crackdown on distracted driving. The “Stay Focused” campaign, which ran from March 1 to April 4, 2025, aimed to improve road safety by targeting inattentive drivers across regional highways and roadways.
During the five-week operation, officers from the West Region—working in collaboration with the Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) team—issued 232 charges under Ontario’s distracted driving legislation. Specific breakdowns by detachment are included in the attached report.
Distracted driving encompasses a wide range of risky behaviours behind the wheel, including using hand-held devices, adjusting navigation systems or music, eating or drinking, personal grooming, and attending to children. It’s important to note that these actions are considered offenses even when a vehicle is stopped at red lights, stop signs, or in traffic.
The OPP continues to remind all drivers: keep your focus on the road—your safety and the safety of others depends on it.
