This week, a London court handed down a sentence to a man from Brooke-Alvinston in connection with the death of 45-year-old cyclist Iwan Smolders. As myFM previously reported, Smolders was tragically struck and killed while riding his bike along Calvert Drive near Strathroy in October 2021.
Months later, 54-year-old Fredrick Earhart was arrested by OPP. The court heard that Earhart, who had a history of alcohol addiction, initially believed he had hit a deer that night. However, he later fled the scene and hid his truck. Last month, he pleaded guilty to hit-and-run.
In a joint submission, both the Crown and defense recommended a two-year conditional sentence for Earhart, which includes one year of house arrest and a driving prohibition.
