Back in August, Gord Robbins of Melbourne launched a unique project, collecting pop can and beer can tabs to raise funds for MRI accessories at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital. This community-driven initiative has been underway for just eight weeks but has already seen incredible success. Robbins says the community’s support has been overwhelming.
With collection buckets spread throughout the area the effort has gone beyond anyone’s expectations. Schools, businesses, restaurants, and local Legions have all been contributing, with residents regularly calling Robbins to come pick up full buckets.
Initially planned to run for a few months, the project will now extend until June or July next year, giving people plenty of time to continue donating. Although the MRI machine itself is fully funded, the money raised will help the hospital purchase essential accessories such as extra headphones, special support pads for patients, and warm blankets.
Robbins hopes to raise a total of $2,000 for the hospital, and with over $300 collected already, he’s optimistic they will meet, or even exceed, this goal.
