The Thames Valley District school board, which is dealing with a budget deficit, has stopped a plan to cut 36 elementary classes that would have impacted 58 teachers. This decision came after the school board made mistakes in counting how many students were actually enrolled.
The school board is already facing a budget shortfall of $7.6 million for the 2024-25 school year, down from $18 million earlier this year.
To reduce the deficit, the board had planned cuts, including 58 teaching positions in elementary schools, 24 positions in high schools, 17 jobs for early childhood educators, and four roles in speech and psychological services.
The audit was announced by the Education Minister after a scandal involving a costly retreat for senior staff in Toronto that cost over $38,000.
During this retreat, 18 top staff members traveled to Toronto using Via Rail’s business class.
