It’s NextGen Farmer day here at 105.7 myFM, where we profile amazing people making a difference in the community presented by Just Farms Realty Inc. Right now we are taking a look at Vivian Crump of the Crump Family Farm.
Established in 1990 by Chris and Vivian Crump, the Crump Family Farm began as a pick-your-own strawberry and vegetable farm, evolving over the years into a diverse agriculture-based business. In 2000, they acquired Vivian’s grandfather’s dairy farm, where they currently reside with their four children, focusing now on a herd of Angus-influenced beef cattle.
In 2020, they renovated a barn to create a retail outlet for farm products. Here, customers can find their own beef, free-range eggs from a variety of hens, freshly milled flour from up to nine grains, including ancient varieties, and honey from local bee hives run by their daughter. The store also features a range of locally sourced products, making it a hub for sustainable and community-oriented shopping.
The farm’s practices reflect a deep commitment to environmental stewardship. In 2019, they implemented a range of measures including a grass waterway, rock chute, and settling ponds to manage water flow across their 500-acre property. They also planted over 3000 trees and revamped their winter pastures to reduce erosion and improve habitat.
Their fields serve a dual purpose, with crops planted in spring that grow throughout summer for fall harvest. After harvesting, a cover crop is sown for winter grazing. This sustainable approach not only maintains soil health but also provides natural feed for their cattle.
The Crump Family Farms is a old school style farm that holds those values and traditions close in everything they do, and their dedication to environmental responsibility and local production ensures a sustainable enterprise that will endure for generations, embodying the essence of farm-to-table living and fostering a connection between consumers and the land.
