CityNews has reported that in a move to streamline services, at least 11 ServiceOntario locations in southern Ontario, including Strathroy, and London are set to close. These closures are part of a unique arrangement with Staples Canada, where kiosks will replace the shuttered centers. Staples Canada secured a sole-sourced deal for this initiative, bypassing a competitive bidding process.
The government has defended the decision, citing factors such as the size of Staples stores, ample parking, extensive Ontario locations, and their willingness to collaborate, following extensive consultations with retail partners. This initiative is part of a pilot project announced in December 2023. Notably, the sudden closure announcement has raised concerns, particularly for longstanding family businesses that had only 70 days’ notice.
The affected locations include Strathroy, London South, Tillsonburg, Toronto Leaside, Windsor East, Newmarket, Mississauga West, Welland, Keswick, Hamilton, and Stoney Creek.
