It took overtime to do it but the Peterborough Lakers secured a 10-9 win over the Brooklin Lacrosse Club last night.
Taite Cattoni was the OT hero, popping the game-winning goal with just 1:07 remaining in the extra period. He finished the game with two goals and three points.
Eli Mclaughlin had a big game as well, chipping in three goals and an assist to the Lakers offensive effort. Josh Currier also had an impressive showing, scoring two goals and two assists, while league leader scorer Holden Cattoni played had a steady game too, picking up a goal and three assists (though it was Mitch Ogilvie who actually scored the goal).
Austin Hasen and Matt Gilray each added a goal to the Lakers tally, while Turner Evans showcased his playmaking skills with an impressive five assists.
In net, Drew Hutchinson made 44 saves, earning him the win and solidifying the Lakers victory.
This game served as an exciting preview of the first round of the playoffs, with the Lakers and the Brooklin Lacrosse Club set to meet in a best-of-seven series starting on Thursday at 8 pm from the PMC.
Unless a miracle allows Six Nations Chiefs star Lyle Thompson to have the biggest game in the history of his illustrious career on Sunday, in the league’s final regular season game of 2023, Lakers Holden Cattoni will win the MSL scoring title. Cattoni currently leads the league in goals (29), assists (50) and points (79).
Since the turn of the century, only two players have ever led the league in all three offensive categories, with legend John Tavares being the last player to do so, in 2008. While playing for St. Regis, Tavares finished that season with 34 goals, 59 assists for 93 points in 17 games. Brooklin’s Shawn Williams is the only other player to accomplish the feat, when he finished the 2004 season with 46 goals, 78 assists and 124 points in 18 games.
