Oneida Nation of the Thames declared a state of emergency on December 15th 2022. Due to weather, their main water tower has reached an all-time low and likely won’t be filled without conservation efforts from the community. A boil water advisory has also been in effect on the Oneida Public Water System since September 2019 and became long term in September 2020. The advisory affects 546 homes and 22 community buildings. The situation is being monitored daily and will continue until water levels are replenished to a safe level.
MP Lianne Rood was able to give myFM comment about the state of emergency. She says she has been in contact with Chief Todd Cornelius about the situation and says Oneida Nation of the Thames has her full support; and that she will advocate and help in any way she can for clean drinking water. She goes onto to say it is unacceptable Oneida has a water shortage on top of a boil water advisory. Rood says she would like to see the government work with Oneida to resolve the issue.
