Jim Van Horne is now the coordinator of the Broadcasting Journalism and TV News programs at Fanshawe College in London. At a point though, he was just an aspiring broadcaster with a dream. In fact, he took a job that was in an area that wasn’t his ultimate career goal. Being a reporter was part of that dream, but the videography aspect of his first job wasn’t necessarily. However, the job ended up being a huge stepping-stone for Van Horne.
Nowadays, still teaching, Van Horne is right where he wants to be. He says there is nothing better than seeing his students succeed.
This success, though, doesn’t necessarily have to be in the field to make Van Horne smile. He recaps tales of two separate former students reaching out. One who chased the broadcasting dream, and one who took a different path.
Recently, Van Horne has been proud of the adaptability of his programs, and counts his blessings that the pandemic happened at a time of technological strength.
At the end of the day, for Van Horne, it’s all about being remembered as a mentor of sorts for the youth he crosses paths with, or at the very least an encouraging person to lean on during development.
He continued to say that when your job satisfaction is high, there’s nothing better, and that’s the way he feels about teaching.
