On January 14, 2025, a survey was sent to over 200 seniors in Strathroy-Caradoc to gather interest in joining a Seniors’ Focus Group. The survey, distributed via email and municipal recreation programs, received 111 responses.
Participants were asked to choose from different time slots, and while the original plan was to create four age-based groups, final availability led to the formation of three mixed-age groups. The sessions, led by Community Services Director Rob Lilbourne, Recreation Supervisor Paul Lattimore, and Program Coordinator Nicky Bolton, lasted two hours and included both individual and group activities.
A total of 36 seniors attended, with 32 from Strathroy and 4 from Caradoc. The majority of participants were women (25), while 11 were men. Discussions focused on available recreation options, desired improvements, and priorities for senior programs.
Key findings highlighted the need for a dedicated seniors’ space, though not necessarily a separate facility. Seniors also emphasized the importance of better communication, especially for those not using social media, and the need for programs to help prevent isolation.
Despite a lower-than-expected turnout, participants provided valuable insights that will shape future recommendations. The feedback gathered will be included in a report to the Council in June, helping to improve recreational opportunities for seniors in the Strathroy-Caradoc community.
