A rush of Arctic air will cause very cold frigid temperatures this week. In response, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region is urging drivers to prepare for extreme cold and heavy snowfall, particularly in the northern parts of the region. Getting stuck in a ditch or caught in a prolonged traffic backup due to a collision can become dangerously life-threatening in such severe conditions.
Here are some critical tips to help you stay safe:
Dress for the weather: Even if you’re driving, wearing warm winter clothing will keep you safe if you become stranded.
Charge your phone: Ensure your phone is fully charged before setting out.
Fill your fuel tank: A full tank will allow you to use your vehicle’s heater in case of a delay.
Pack a winter survival kit: Include essentials like a shovel, blanket, warm clothing, food, water, booster cables, a flashlight, high-energy snacks, matches, and a candle.
Plan your route: Check road conditions before you travel by visiting the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) website at Ontario 511 or Municipal 511 at Municipal511.
Taking these precautions can make a critical difference in staying safe during the extreme winter weather.
