Avian flu has been detected in three birds in the London region, according to public health officials. Three Canada geese, recently found dead in London and Strathroy, tested positive for a highly contagious strain of the virus this winter. According to an announcement Friday from the Middlesex-London Health Unit, a reminder has been sent out for people to avoid handling wild birds. As myFM reported to you recently, several poultry farms in southwestern Ontario including Strathroy and North Middlesex have also been quarantined due to avian flu outbreaks, and there has been an increase in the number of birds killed by the deadly H5NX strain.
Health officials have stated they will not provide individual reports for each confirmed case but will keep the public informed if the situation escalates.
Deceased wild birds can be reported to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at 1-866-673-4781.
