A Peterborough woman who was instrumental in the growth of synchronized swimming internationally has died, invoking memories of her many contributions to the sport as an athlete and builder.
Joyce Corner was 96-years-old.
Toronto-born, Corner made Peterborough her home in 1975. In the pool, she competed and won gold medals in several international competitions, and competed well into her 80s with her duet partner sister Diane.
Joyce co-founded the Mississauga Synchronized Swimming Club, supported the creation of the Kawartha Trent Synchro Club, and judged across Canada and the world, including at the Olympic Games, the Commonwealth Games and the Pan American Games.
In 1991, Corner was inducted into the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame. She’s also an inductee to the Ontario Artistic Swimming Wall of Honour.
Corner’s life will be celebrated July 7th, 1 p.m., at Bellevue on Stoney Lake where she spent many summers.
