OPP have launched the CAMSafe program, a voluntary initiative to compile a database of security cameras in residential and commercial areas to be used by police in investigations.
When accessing the CAMSafe database, officers can see a map of the local area and click on registered addresses for more information, like property owner contact details.
Community members interested in participating only need to provide basic contact information and camera location, but they can include additional details if they wish, like camera direction or camera screenshots.
Police cannot directly access security cameras or cloud-based accounts, but they can request footage from property owners using the contact information provided in the database.
Registrants have the ability to view and manage their own information, including deleting their account or updating their details at any time.
