The Canadian Canoe Museum (CCM) celebrated the official opening of its new purpose-built, two-story museum with a grand ceremony on Saturday. The event marked the culmination of years of planning and hard work, ushering in a new era for the museum, the local community, and the arts and culture sector.
Located at 2077 Ashburnham Drive, the museum’s new 65,000-square-foot facility sits on a five-acre lakefront campus with stunning views of Little Lake, surrounded by public parks and connected to the Trans Canada Trail.
The new museum, designed by Unity Design Studio, boasts state-of-the-art features including a Collection Hall that displays 100% of the museum’s watercraft collection, a 20,000-square-foot Exhibition Hall, an authentic Artisan Studio, and a premier event rental space with a sweeping view of the lake.
The museum’s opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries, donors, and government partners, including Peterborough-Kawartha MP Michelle Ferreri, who highlighted the educational elements of the facility.
The new CCM is expected to become a significant cultural and recreational tourism destination, offering a range of on-land and on-water experiences for visitors.
Mayor Jeff Leal says the area has a rich history when it comes to the water.
The museum officially opens to the public today, welcoming guests to explore its exhibits and enjoy its various amenities.
