A new five-year strategic plan recently adopted by Peterborough’s YWCA has prioritized the acquisition of long-term safe and affordable housing as key in helping women and their children be safe.
YWCA executive director Kim Dolan says domestic violence rates, both nationally and locally, have increased dramatically since 2020, creating an urgent need for additional planning around women’s safety, including pushing harder for the provision of safe places to live.
Dolan notes a survey that YWCA Canada conducted of member agencies made it clear that housing and homelessness is “our priority issue.”
In addition to increased lobbying for safe living spaces for clients, Dolan says securing sustainable funding is another identified area of focus.
