Today myFM is celebrating local coaches and the impact they’ve had on athletes in Strathroy-Caradoc with our Hooray for Coaches Day feature, presented by Pete’s Sports.
Each coach we spoke with has had their own impact on the community and the residents in it.
One of those coaches is Sensei Jerry Pilon of the Dojo in Strathroy, who told us a little about himself.
Sometimes you don’t find your start right away, and Pilon was the same.
He wasn’t always a Sensei, however due to an injury he found his place teaching Karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Many great moments in life are the ones you don’t expect, for Pilon that moment came in the form of a student who had lost their sight.
He said he was blessed with the chance to teach this student.
Coaches often have to come up with unexpected way to teach their students.
While working with the student who lost their sight, he came up with a unique way in order to teach without the student having to see and follow his moves.
Sensei Pilon also takes bullying very seriously and and unfortunately on the rise in today’s society, however he wants his students to know how to defend themselves but, he said it should only ever be used within the space of the Dojo.
For anyone looking to get into coaching any sports, Pilon has a tip.
