For the second year in a row, Trent University is set to be the proud host of the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) Baggataway Cup Championship, taking place from November 3rd to 5th, 2023.
The upcoming championship holds special significance as the Trent Excalibur men’s lacrosse team prepares to defend their 2022 Baggataway Cup Champion title, marking a historic first in the program’s history. “Hosting the Baggataway Cup Championship last year was such an honour,” Leslie Spooner, interim director of Trent Athletics, shared. “We are very proud of what the team accomplished last season and we can’t wait to cheer them on again this year, as they vie for their second consecutive championship.”
This event will mark the third instance of Trent University hosting the national championship for its men’s lacrosse program. The university had previously hosted the championships in both 2022 and 2012. Kevin Caplice, CUFLA Commissioner, expressed excitement about the return to Trent University for the 2023 Baggataway Cup, stating, “It is rare that we host championships back-to-back, but with the support the fans showed for CUFLA in 2022, how could we say no when Trent approached us to host again.”
The previous year’s Baggataway Cup Championship witnessed the Justin Chiu Stadium filled to capacity with fervent fans over the entire weekend, all gathered to witness an elite display of lacrosse. The Trent Excalibur are anticipating a similar level of intensity in competition this year, with the enthusiastic crowd once again rallying behind the green and white team.
Sarah Batley, assistant director of Trent Athletics, described the success of the previous tournament as encouraging and rewarding. “Seeing a stadium full of lacrosse fans old and young was so encouraging for the student-athletes and for the entire Trent Athletics team,” Batley stated. “We’re excited to once again showcase our high-performance varsity program to the community, and we invite folks to join us again this year to cheer on the Excalibur.”
The Baggataway Cup Championship is scheduled to take place at Trent University’s Justin Chiu Stadium from November 3rd to 5th, 2023.
