A Lakefield area resort stands as a shining example of what an be done to not only operate more efficiently but also greatly reduce the impact on the environment.
On Wednesday, Steve and Anne Wildfong, co-owners of Lake Edge Cottages off Highway 28, hosted representatives of the local tourism sector and green-focused organizations to unveil the 127 solar panels recently installed on three buildings at their property on Katchewanooka Lake.
Partially funded by an $85,000 contribution from the federal government, the project provides clear evidence of how solar power can greatly offset energy needs, which is not only more efficient but also reduces the carbon footprint.
Wildfong, who bought the decades-old resort in 2019, says the solar powered system went live just this January but has already reaped a benefit.
Wildfong’s “dream” is that other business owners will be inspired by Lake Edge Cottage’s example.
Peterborough and the Kawarthas tourism director Joe Rees said the Wildfongs’ commitment to green energy infrastructure and use is a microcosm of what’s hoped for on a region-wide scale.
