This past Monday in Plymouth Michigan, the USA Hockey National Hockey championships were played. Strathroy minor hockey alum, Austin Brekelmans won the U14 National Hockey Championship with his Bishop Kearney Selects Hockey team. A major accomplishment for himself and the team, as gthey were able to knock off the #1 ranked Shattuck St.Marys and #2 ranked team the Chicago Mission to capture the National title.
Austin started the season with the Elgin Middlesex Canucks U15 Team and was selected to join Bishop Kearney Selects team to secure a strong run in the playoffs. He would join players from all over Canada and the US, also including a player from Latvia. The team competes all around the US while being schooled and living in Rochester NY at the Bishop Kearney High School. In a short 4 years they have established themselves as a high-end program amongst the countries elite. This is their second National Championship to date.
Austin was the leading scorer in the New York State prequalifying tournament in Buffalo, NY. His last name may be familiar to local hockey fans as his father Cory and uncles Chris and Curtis Brekelmans were inducted into the Strathroy Rockets Wall of Fame after controlling the blue line for 10 years with the Strathroy Rockets.
