It’s prison for 5 years for Strathroy’s Alicia Van Bree for causing a deadly crash while driving drunk over 2 years ago. As part of her sentencing in a London courtroom Wednesday, Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia said the Strathroy woman never intended on July 17th, 2020, to go out and kill 8-year-old girl Nihal Toor, and seriously injure her grandmother. but Van Bree’s “moral blameworthiness is high” and the courts, must craft a sentence “to reflect the public’s condemnation of this conduct”.
Shortly before 10 p.m. July 17th, Nihal’s mother was driving east along Egremont Drive, and Van Bree was westbound wanting to turn left onto Hickory Drive, put her signal on and turned into the path of the Toor car. The Justice noted that Van Bree wasn’t speeding or driving erratically, but officers at the scene quickly concluded she had been drinking and later readings showed a blood alcohol level of between 140 and 170 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, which at the high end were readings double the legal limit. The Crown attorney had suggested an 8-year sentence, and the defence argued for a 2-3-year sentencing.
