The Melbourne Agricultural Society has a great opportunity for farmers in the area. They are once again bringing back their Field Crop Competition. Board Member Don McClure shared with myFM all the details to qualify.
An independent outside judge will be brought in to determine the winner, they will be looking for yield potential, weed control, freedom from pesticides and insects, freedom from lodging, maturity, crop development and general appearance. On August 20th, Melbourne will be hosting a 4H beef cattle show where they will wrap up the field crop competition. You must bring in 5 ears of corn, if you signed up for corn, or 3 soy plants if you signed up for soy beans. McClure says the prize is still being sorted out, but you can definitely win bragging rights. To register, you can contact your local seed dealer or, call Hathaway Custom Seeds at (519) 289-1333 or the Melbourne Agricultural Society at (519) 289-5600.
