Long-time Green Party Leader Elizabeth May announced Monday she is stepping down from the role she held for 13 years but will remain as the MP for her riding. Deputy Leader of the party Jo-Ann Roberts will take over as interim leader. Lambton-Kent-Middlesex Green party candidate of record Anthony Li spoke to myFM about May’s leadership tenure, which began in 2006, and how much her efforts have paid off for the party.
Li agrees with May that this is a “perfect moment,” for her to step away, as the party is coming off its strongest federal election performance. They had three MP’s elected. The nomination process for a new leader will begin in October 2020, and Li thinks this is going to help spark the growing Green party movement among Canadian youth.
