LOCAL PSYCHIATRIST AGREES THAT INCENTIVES SHOULD BE CREATED TO ATTRACT DOCTORS 8/10/2018 11:04:56 AM
If you think that finding a psychiatrist here in Strathroy-Caradoc is hard, it's not just you that thinks that. Earlier this week the Coalition of Ontario Psychiatrists released a statement saying that Ontario is short about 200 psychiatrists, mostly in rural areas.
Dr. Greg Jaychuk is a Psychiatrist at the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital and says that statement rings true here in Strathroy-Caradoc.
In Dr. Jaychuk's opinion, planning for where psychiatrists should be located may not have been done that well.
The current government model dictates that psychiatrists spread out based on population density, which means that more of them find their way to urban centres like Toronto. Dr. Jaychuk added that there hasn't been a lot of collective accountability on how psychiatrists have been spread out either, which has lead to the uneven distribution of psychiatrists in Ontario.
He says that there is no easy fix to this problem, but the coalition's request of incentive programs would be a good way to start.
