LOCAL FOOD BANK SHOCKED AND DISAPPOINTED ABOUT SOCIAL ASSISTANCE CUTS
8/7/2018 10:11:17 AM

The Ontario Association of Food Banks has released a statement saying that they are disappointed and alarmed by the news that the Ontario Government wants to cancel the basic income pilot program and slash the funding increase for social assistance by half.

Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program was set to receive a 3% increase, but the government has lowered that increase to only 1.5%

Major Roland Shea of the Strathroy Salvation Army says that he feels the same way at the food bank association.

Shea also said that he doesn't understand MPP Monte McNaughtons comments that keeping the funding increase at 1.5% was an act of compassion.

Shea also agreed with the statement from the Association of Food Banks that called for an immediate funding increase to social aid programs in Ontario
