Our area economy seems to be doing ok even though the most recent jobless rate increased. Late last week we found out that the local jobless rate increased to 5.5% per cent in June, a rise from May's 5.3% which was the second-lowest rate ever recorded for the London census area, which includes St. Thomas and Strathroy. Statistics Canada says the number of people working rose by 1,200 in June and the Canadian economy gained 32,000 jobs in June, but the unemployment rate rose to 6% from 5.8% because of an increase in the labour force. Over the past year the economy in Canada has added 215,000 jobs, or 1.2%, all of it in the full time jobs status.
