RECORD NUMBER OF BEACHES AND MARINAS GIVEN BLUE FLAG HONOUR
5/16/2018 7:00:05 AM

You will see some local beaches and marinas flying blue flags this summer. A record 27 beaches and 9 marinas across Canada have been recognized this year including the Port Franks marina, the Grand Bend beach, Grand Bend marina, Bayfield main beach, and the Bluewater marina in Bayfield. Blue Flag Program Manager with Environmental Defence, Kelsey Scarfone says the Blue Flag Program is an internationally respected eco-certification.

She says that the whole process is a very involved one as it starts with the municipality, beach or marina submitting an application to Blue Flag Canada. From there the application goes to a national jury made up of experts in science, education and water quality experts and they pass on their recommendations to the international level. Following international judging flags are then raised, and this process happens every year even if a site has been a Blue Flag recipient in the past.
