April is Be a Donor Month, which is a time that people are encouraged to become organ donors. One organ donor can save 8 lives and a tissue donor can enhance 75 others. According to President and CEO of Trillium Gift of Life Network, Ronnie Gausie we have a wait list in Ontario of the most medically urgent people in need of a transplant, and over 1500 people on the list and one person dies every 3 days just waiting for a transplant. Gausie says while many people support organ donation the actual number of people registered is low.
Gausie adds that families of potential donors need to consent and usually always donate when their loved one has registered to be an organ donor. To register to become an organ donor takes 2 minutes online at beadonor.ca and all you need is to know your age and have your OHIP card. This designation is now attached to your health card. Anyone age 16 and older can register, simply stop by the Strathroy ServiceOntario office at 200 Metcalfe St E.
