The Oneida Nations of the Thames has started up a training program with the help of the Six Nations Fire & Emergency Service Training Academy and the Ontario Firefighter Society. Oneida Fire Department Captain Adrian Chrisjohn says the new training programs are in response to a decline in the number of volunteer firefighters in the local first nations community.

Chrisjohn adds that the programs hope to attract more volunteer firefighters and educate them on proper use of equipment, as well as the science behind fire behaviour and how to combat different types of fire. Chrisjohn adds that this is especially important in First Nations Communities like Oneida because many homes still don't have smoke alarms, so the fire department is the only line of defense.
